2011 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2011 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

A New York City subway train holds 1,200 people. This blog was viewed about 4,500 times in 2011. If it were a NYC subway train, it would take about 4 trips to carry that many people.

Las Chicas, best french toast… ever??

. . .

[Las Chicas, 203 Carlisle street Balaclava]

I love stace, and I love Las chicas. The two together in very close proximity blew my socks off!

Watermelon/Apple/Mint fresh juice…. WHOAH!

This is sooo good, and so fresh!

French toast with marscapone & strawberries, lovingly drizzled with sweet sweet maple.

If you have a sweet tooth, like I certainly do, try this amazing french toast option at Las Chicas!

Something warm?

Stace had oats with bananas and almond slivers. I think this one is a 2 person deal…stace just couldn’t finish it. Very filling!

The area at times isn’t the most safest, but it sure does pound with energy and a mix of all sorts.

We had a very strange man yell at us for no reason at all, but I think he was senile, and I swear someone was following us.

Oh, and some crackpot decided to copy what we were saying…. it takes all sorts.

Apart from this minor set back, I love how carlisle street is always alive, and once you’re inside Las Chicas, you’re amongst safe breakfast loving crowd. And if that doesn’t please, the charming and entertaining waiting staff will sure tick that box.

Tennis ball vs MCC young members ball

. . .

[MCC young members ANZAC ball, Melbourne]

For many, Holy Thursday is the start of some heavy partying/drinking being Good Friday the next day and nothing being open.

Good Friday for some is a “write off day”, well it was for me: hot cross buns for breakfast coupled with unregretfully lounging in my PJs all day- “good” friday. I could go on about this day being the holiest on the christian calendar… but this is not the platform for my waning religious concerns…

This year, the Easter long weekend and ANZAC day falls on the same consecutive days of public holidays.
It is a good time to reflect on sacrifice, in whatever form that may be.

For me and my friends, it was sacrificing our dignity and “being a lady”, and just having a “leg-pumpingly” great evening. (“Leg-pumping”: a term coined post an incident involving a boy, a girl, and some leg pumping. Needless to say, it was a night full of laughs, regrets involving fast food binges and …memories)

We knew it was going to be large… on this eve, it started off with a tennis ball…

In the midst of the chaos of Work, work easter egg hunt and a delayed tram: I had 45 minutes to shower, get ready, and be at Miss P’s house. (Jesus!!)

Shower: TICK
Dress: TICK
Nails: “I’ll do it in the cabbage”
Cab: TICK
Shoes: TICK
Bag: “keys/cash/phone”
Tennis ball stuck IN THE GAP BETWEEN HEEL AND SOUL!!!!???:…. tick!! (how this even occurred without my knowledge is beyond me)

Yes, it was going to be a good night…

And this is what we feasted on:

I know right?…. Set menus usually kill me slowly with boredom – but I was excited!

Entrée: “Ocean Tray”

20110423-085345.jpg

I actually like my scallops with roe – its visually more attractive and I love seafood, so I don’t see the problem with taste. (it’s a personal thing I know…) Everything else was moorish little mouthfuls. Not a fan of cauliflower mash with raisins though…

Main: Alternative between Chicken/couscous

or Veal on a bed of potato mash and beans.

20110423-085403.jpg

I was secretly hoping for veal, and the girls were wanting chicken: win for me 🙂

The veal. was. delicious!!! Melt in your mouth, delicious. Albeit a bit cold as we were running a muck in the “vintage photo booth” (love!)

I’m a “vege-aquarian” (she says tentatively)…so I don’t eat much meat, however on the off chance I do, and its like this? YES PLEASE, Meat me!….. meat me please.

Dessert unfortunately was untouched…
My Pavlova tasted like cough syrup…

20110423-085420.jpg

In the words of our P.I.M.P (b-rad), “Panna Cotta is always such a disappointment at these things” and plus, by this stage we were getting our dressed up selves on to the D-floor to join a bunch of white people dance like black people.

There was a lot of “dougie-ing”, and maybe a few “catdaddy-ing”. Watching men (some were boys) getting down with it, and sweating their bootys up a storm is truly entertaining.

This of-course wasn’t the last meal we had… HJs was good to us: chicken wrap… fcking awesome in the middle of the night 🙂

Hope you’re enjoying your time with family/friends and kick started this fine long weekend in style.

Riverland cafe

[ along the yarra, Melbourne ]

This will be short, much like my negative breakfast experience there…

I shouldve known by the waitress, she had no idea…

The location is just beautiful for a stroll then a sunny lazy breakfast watching the yummy rowers, eating your yummy food- WRONG!!

Not only was the service really bad- I had to ask for cutlery ( she looked at me blankly…) but the most important part, the food, was …. Breaky road kill…

1) Ciabatta???? It was stale…. And flavourless (I can’t believe I tried to eat it)

2) the ‘poached’ egg was in a perfect circular shape, giving me the impression it had been …premade???(I was so confused)
Not only is bad poached egg a crime- it was burnt
Sorry- how the eff do you burn poached egg!!!!!!?????????

3) soggy, droopy, sad spinich

4) little tiny birds that actually attack your food!!!-fly up, flap, steal!! Quite an efficient move really, I commend you! (now please go and die…sorry the only birds I like are the ones wrapped in mushroom & cream& puff pastry…harsh…)

The only ok thing was the pecorino… But it was sooo big it overpowered my ‘death by’ burnt, premade poached egg mess… ( which I guess may just have been a blessing…)

I didnt think I’d be sharing bad breakfast, but this should be known.

Their menu was enticing, but I may as well have eaten that… Wouldve had more flavour!!!!!!

…………………..
Not so tastefully yours,

Joanna

[Main street, mornington]

Soak yourself in friendly, sun-kissed mornington peninsula energy.

Centrally located on main street, this family friendly location provides the right mix of indoor/outdoor space, best of the local service and delicious, hearty breakfasts.

Their French toasts are lusciously soaked in the perfect amount of mapley deliciousness!!!!!

Had the fluffy ricotta pancakes with a decadent serving of rich icecream… I was certainly satisfied for a good portion of the morning.

Yum city!!!!

I always battle between sweet or savoury for breaky, but after reading about that pancake-the decision was clearly made for me!

Joanna
